The history of Shea Moisture goes back more than 100 years. In 1912, Sofi Tucker of Sierra Leone discovered Shea butter from the nuts of the Shea butter tree. She had been selling Shea Butter, African black soap and homemade skin and hair care products such as shampoo conditioner in rural Sierra Leone since then.

Sofi Tucker was 19 when she started selling this fair trade nourishing butter as homemade skin and hair products and the Shea Moisture brand was born.

Three guesses what has been the main ingredient in Shea Moisture Curl products for generations now? Right! Shea butter!

What is Shea moisture?

The brand Shea Moisture makes sure your hair becomes and stays healthy through their hair care products.

The brand has over 150 different products and multiple product lines. Enough choice!

As mentioned earlier, the main ingredient of these hair products is Shea butter. This ensures that the fair trade products of Shea Moisture are not suitable for all hair types.

This ingredient makes the hair quite heavy so they are mainly suitable for people with frizzy hair.

The ingredients of Shea Moisture come from all over the world. This is because the brand likes to support the local economy and ensure a fair production process.

For example, the Shea butter is made by hand in Ghana, where women make it according to a fair production process.

Also, all products are free of silicones, sulfates and harmful mineral oils.

Other many advantages of Shea Moisture is that the brand does not test on animals and that the brand does its best to remain as affordable as possible.

Does Shea Moisture work for my hair type?

The ingredients of Shea Moisture

As mentioned above, the main ingredient of the brand’s products is Shea butter.

This raw Shea butter has a creamy yellow-white substance and is, not only at Shea Moisture, but also at other (cosmetic) brands very popular.

This is because the ingredient deeply nourishes both the hair and (head) skin and does not cause irritations making the product suitable for people with sensitive scalps. Thus, it is specially developed.

Another ingredient that is often found in Shea Moisture’s products is Jamaican black castor oil and Coconut Hibiscus.

This Jamaican black castor oil contains the fatty acid ricin, this ingredient helps the hair to stay healthy and strong.

In addition, when the beans of the castor tree are roasted, ash is released. This ash protects and nourishes the hair extra well!

These are not the only two ingredients that you can find in, for example, a leave in conditioner, restore shampoo, hibiscus curl or shampoo conditioner from Shea Moisture.

The leave in conditioner and for example the Shine conditioner softens, detangles, protects and nourishes the hair.

In addition to Shea butter and Jamaican black castor oil, the brand’s products often contain coconut oil.

The products vary from moisturizing creams, softening shampoos to an organic Shea Butter.

These three ingredients greatly nourish the hair and are therefore perfect for dry curly hair!
